About Photovoice
Photovoice is a peer-led, supportive group approach for opening your mind & changing your future.
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice is a group-based learning environment for people who want to create change in themselves, connect to their communities, and build self-confidence. Photovoice uses photo-journaling as an empowerment tool to break out of isolation and repression by telling your story through imagery and self-expression.
Through the use of an inclusive environment and two dedicated community coaches, Photovoice participants are supported in the challenging process of working towards a self-selected community goal.
This is accomplished by mapping out each step together in a guided, weekly, 90-minute class and individual coaching sessions outside of class for additional support, by request.
At the end of the class, participants may submit their photo journal entries to be displayed in a mobile art exhibit to commemorate their journey.
How It Works
Photovoice is a 10-week class that can be taught in a virtual, in-person, or hybrid format. It’s led by two peer facilitators, called community coaches, who also set & work towards their own community goals alongside the class.
Cameras, workbooks, and other technology will be provided as needed to participate in the class. Each class will meet weekly to work through a chapter of the workbook, build community with one another, and share photo-journal entries at the end of each class.
Outside of the class, participants will be tasked with taking photos and writing weekly photo journal entries to document their progress towards their community goal.
“Photovoice is about so much more than the camera. It’s about developing community and self-confidence. It’s getting un-stuck, learning how to believe in yourself and not feel limited by your diagnosis.
The camera is a small piece. It’s a tool to help people get on the path to making positive change in their life. It helps them find community, which is the ultimate goal of this program.”

Caliste's Photovoice
Caliste, a Photovoice participant, says, “Photovoice gave me encouragement to get out in the community and see things in different ways.
It also helped with my social skills and how to talk with others”
They shared their photo and words:
My Community
"The running water in my community reminds me of me and my spirit because it never quits and even when it freezes it stands firm and strong."
