Within the past 24 hours, several Supreme Court rulings have struck significant blows to equity and justice in our country.
Yesterday’s ruling effectively dismantles affirmative action in our higher education system. Today the court opened the door to overt discrimination of protected classes by businesses and eliminated the Biden Administration’s plan to offer some relief from growing student debt. The impacts of these decisions, both those we anticipate and those that can’t yet know, will be felt for years to come. Today we know that they are sitting most heavily on those within BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, and that they may signal real setbacks after decades of hard-won progress that has not even begun to rectify inequity in our institutions and throughout our society.
What remains unchanged is WellPower’s commitment to valuing, affirming and supporting every person and their lived experience. The values of our organization remain steadfast: we will continue to meet people where they are, to care for the well-being of everyone in our communities. Our commitment to underserved communities in particular is unwavering. This is and will continue to be true no matter what rulings we see from the court.
To our staff, our community and the people we serve, know that we support you, we affirm you and we have your back. WellPower will always be a place that is inclusive to all, and we continue to work to create and protect spaces where everyone is celebrated for who they are.
